Katy Perry

Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, began her career originally as a gospel singer. Early attempts at album releases and record deals proved unsuccessful, causing Perry to change tack completely. The singer is now known for racy lyrics and eccentric stage costumes, a far cry from her earlier church music days.

About Katy Perry

Few people even realise that Katy was plugging away at her career for many years before reaching her current fame and celebrity status. Beginning at age fifteen, learning her craft from rock veterans and picking up the guitar, the foundations were being laid for what would one day become a pop sensation.

Early attempts at a career in Christian music career failed when her label, Red Hill, ceased operations in 2001. Following this, Perry went though a number of contracts with companies such as Island Def Jam Music Group, all of which came to an end with albums being shelved and poor commercial success with her material.

Despite early disappointment, Perry was beginning to get noticed by industry professionals and the media alike. Catching the attention of the press got her named the next big thing in music in 2004 by Blender magazine. With this under her belt, industry leaders at Columbia records decided to take a risk in signing Perry in 2007, marking a turnaround in her career.

Success and Fame

With the release of single, ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in May 2008, Katy’s fate was sealed. The song’s controversial theme initially met resistance, both at the record company and in the public at large. Producers were unsure whether the public would be enthusiastic about such a song. Nonetheless, the old saying, no publicity is bad publicity came into play here, with the song’s close to the bone lyrics gaining her popularity and instant fame. After that Katy Perry tickets and recorded songs are always in demand.

Katy was determined to prove that she was not a one hit wonder, and followed up with single, ‘Hot n Cold’ which was just as well received. Embarking on tours following this success, with her album also reaching number nine on the billboard charts, Katy just had to keep the ball rolling.

Since then, Katy has had the chance to collaborate with some of music’s hottest names, such as Timbaland on track, ‘If We Ever Meet Again’ and 3OH!3 for ‘Starstrukk’. This has not only consolidated her status as one of the big players in the recording industry today, but shown the world that despite difficult beginnings, with perseverance, anything is possible.

Katy has since released album, ‘Teenage Dream’, a title which she attributes to her happiness following her engagement to comedian, Russell Brand. Now famous for her celebrity relationship with the star, as well as her music, Katy is often in the news. The record’s first track, ‘California Gurls’ went straight to number one, another sign of the potential longevity of Perry’s career.
