Katy Perry’s material has been consistently high quality and fun. The singer never fails to receive rave reviews for her recorded music and live performances and fans are always ready to queued up for Katy Perry.
One of the Boys
Perry’s first commercially successful album, One of the Boys, received mixed reviews overall, but high praise in some corners. Billboard magazine supported the album, claiming that it was both creative and quirky. Just like the headlining single, ‘I Kissed A Girl’, many of the tracks were seen as controversial, leading to some negative reviews, from critics who felt the material was crass.
Nonetheless, to create controversy was what set Perry apart in the first place. Perry is known for pushing boundaries and saying things usually left unsaid. The album reflected her daring personality and show cased her great vocal skills.
Teenage Dream
Once again causing a stir, Perry released her new album, ‘Teenage Dream’ in early 2010, with the cover showing her lying naked in a cloud of candyfloss. Never one to shy away from controversy or the spotlight, Perry followed with the first single ‘California Gurls’ showing her wearing a bikini made of cupcakes.
Such a bold and daring attitude won her both good and bad criticism once again. Some reviewers dislike her lyrics, which are often about sex or partying. Equally, others love her combination of an All American teen pop sound, with edgy and out-there lyrics.
Warped Tour 2008
Perry’s first opportunity to get out there and tour was with the Warped Tour in 2008. With other well-known acts such as Paramore and Gym Class Heroes, Perry had to hold her own against some of music’s big guns.
Perry was a smash hit at the tour, which usually features heavier music. Nonetheless, audiences flocked to the stage to see Perry’s set, which was full of her most popular and infectious songs, proving her to be a real crowd pleaser.
Playing guitar and singing live was a winning formula for a crowd who typically enjoy a rockier sound, showing Perry straddling genres and knowing how to hook in audiences by the first note.
Hello Katy Tour
After such success with records and supporting on events such as the Warped Tour, Perry decided to embark on her own solo tour. The ‘Hello Katy Tour’ was a sell-out success, supporting her debut album, ‘One of the Boys’. The tour was lengthy, spanning many countries from the USA to the UK, with a line up of her hit singles and album tracks.
Playing to sell-out audiences, with the tour it became widely acknowledge that Perry is a force to be reckoned with on stage. With charisma to match her stunning and quirky outfits, Perry delivered not only great music, but a spectacle.
